A deck that is not the one you own
Forty-eight cards, two of everything from nine up to ace, and no numbers below the nine at all. The ten sits above the king, which is the single detail that trips up every visitor arriving from another trick-taking game and never trips up anyone who grew up with this one. Twelve cards to a seat, you in the South chair with North as partner, bidding from twenty upward until somebody buys the right to name trump.
Two scores in one hand
What makes Pinochle worth the learning curve is that you are paid twice from the same twelve cards. Meld comes first — marriages, arounds, and the queen of spades beside the jack of diamonds that gives the game its name — laid out for everyone to see before a single card is led. Then twenty-five counters are fought for in the tricks, one for each ace, ten and king captured, plus one for taking the last. A bid has to be justified by both halves at once, and a partnership that falls short loses the full contract rather than merely failing to gain. The match here runs to 150, the traditional race to 1,500 played at a tenth of the scale so a session fits in an evening.

The site is built and maintained by Card Games Studio, independent, self-funded, and behind about twenty other free card and tile game domains. We put that in writing because a network of sites linking to one another owes readers an explanation, and the studio page names every one of them.
